One of the biggest stories in the US this past week has been the uproar over the Obamacare provisions being handed down by the Department of Health and Human Services. The new mandates force religiously-affiliated organizations to dispense contraceptives against their consciences in violation of long-held religious freedom.

All week national Christian leaders decried the action. On Friday, radio commentator Sean Hannity held a "Crisis Forum" on the issue. The nation's most watched cable network trumpeted the danger against religious liberty almost every hour. And today, I attended a private gathering of Washington State leaders to hear a major Republican presidential candidate speak to the issue.

Do you know what these national leaders, Sean Hannity, the cable news network and presidential candidate all have in common?

They are Catholics.

Is God using the Catholic Church to awaken America?

Time to Unite Behind Mitt Romney for President

I serve on the board of the National Association of Evangelicals--the largest leadership consortium of churches and Christian leaders in the United States.

Nine months ago the organization sent a questionnaire to its members asking us which person we favored for president of the United States. At that time there were twelve different candidates in the race--plenty of good people to choose from.

This may surprise some of you, but without hesitation I voted for Mitt Romney.

It looks like the people of Florida agree with me. Because of their decisive vote, and what will follow in the month of February, it is time for people that care about America's future to unite behind Mitt Romney and propel him to the White House.
However, the most impressive thing about him, (there are many quarterbacks who are more skilled than Tim Tebow) was his bold faith in Jesus Christ.

That faith created Tebomania, "Tebowing," (kneeling in prayer), and some of the biggest football ratings in the history of the NFL.

The theme for Barack Obama's re-election campaign is now clear. He can't run on "hope and change" because though he is trying to change America into a European social democracy he's decreasing hope at home. He can't campaign on his economic achievements--unemployment is 8.6% and federal deficits are exploding.

He can't run on his foreign policy successes. Despite the one positive of killing Osama bin Laden, it is the premature removal of troops from Iraq, his waffling on Iran, and thumbing his nose at Israel have made the world a far more dangerous place.

So here's the campaign theme that the president and his media allies will trumpet throughout 2012: We have a "Do Nothing Congress" headed by the House Republicans that is preventing America from going forward.

That's a lie.

What we really have is a "Sinister US Senate" that desperately needs replacing.

2012: The Year of a Leadership Tsunami?

Chinese New Year is known for the animal that symbolizes the prospects for the coming year. 2011 was "The Year of the Rabbit." Is that why it went so fast, or am I just showing my age? This week the "Super Committee" is tasked to enact important budget cuts--but the Democrats won't budge on raising taxes and the Republicans are showing weakness.

The problem cannot not be solved by increasing taxes. Out-of-control SPENDING is our scourge. Raising taxes will discourage economic recovery and only grow the size of government. That's a lethal combination. Our current politicians are like pimps that are perpetuating their power and the dependency habits of their citizen-prostitutes by refusing to do what's right--dramatically cutting spending.

We need to throw out the cowards in 2012 and elect some courageous leaders who will save this Republic from a frightful financial suicide.

Many people seem perplexed or nervous about the GOP presidential contest. The field is fairly broad and there have already been nearly a dozen debates.

For a few weeks Hermain Cain was up and this week saw the rise of Newt Gingrich. Mitt Romney looks steady but is not pulling away. Michelle Bachmann won the Iowa Straw poll but is now in single digits. Rick Perry catapulted to the front at first, then made some debate mistakes and fell back.

And on and on.

Everywhere I go, people are asking me who I will vote for, and express dismay over the daily changing landscape. To those who are concerned, I have a simple response:

Relax and watch the game.

Politics is like the National Football League. The "regular season" is still going on and we really don't know who will make the "playoffs." We also don't know who will get hot in their playoff run and then go on to the Big Dance.

So do not despair. The game is on, one "team" will rise to the top, and that "team" should go on to beat Team Obama in the "Super Bowl."

My prediction: GOP 55 - Obama 45.

Here's why the 2012 Republican presidential race is eerily similar to the NFL.

Sobering Lessons from the Firing of Joe Paterno

I must admit that Coach Joe Paterno--a football coaching legend at Penn State for the past forty-six years--has been a hero of mine for decades. When he became PSU's coach in 1965, I was just entering my junior high school years when sports was very important to me.

Coach Paterno made a deep impression. He seemed to be fair, disciplined, a man of integrity and faith, and he produced a great football program. In 2011 he became the winningest coach in all of Division I football history. In an age of slick and arrogant coaches, Joe Pa seemed to be the "Gold Standard" of steadiness and grace.

So when I heard he'd been fired because of some child abuse charges being leveled at a former assistant coach, I inwardly reacted like many Penn State students did. I thought to myself, "Discipline the offender but spare Coach Joe Pa!"

But I was wrong. Joe Paterno needed to go.

Here's why--and many other things we can learn from the Penn State fiasco.

God Quietly Builds a Remnant

In our sobering world of falling stock prices, Euro Zone debt problems, high unemployment, revolution and change in the Middle East, and great uncertainty on the horizon, I've got some good news for you.

I say "quietly" because it seems to have happened quite unnoticed by the powers that be. Kind of like the fall of the Iron Curtain that changed the world in 1989--or the shift of global Christianity that has gone south and west during the past few decades as chronicled in my book The Fourth Wave.

For quite some time the mainstream media have told us that the problem in Washington, D.C. is gridlock--that our politicians just need to listen to one another, and then come up with some bi-partisan solutions to the nation's problems.

We are told ad nauseam that political gridlock is the problem--that both conservatives and liberals are to blame--and that the answer is to heed the call for civility made by Rodney King in 1992:

"You know, can we all get along?"

But now thanks to Occupy Wall Street, the truth is clear: The game to shape America's future is on--the teams have taken the field--and only one team can win. It's a cultural clash that will end in victory for one side and defeat for the other.

For which side will you fight?
